Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants restore missing teeth by simulating the look, feel, and function of your natural teeth. Dental implants serve as alternatives to both removable dentures and bridges and replace both single and multiple missing teeth.

Dental implants are metal posts or frames that Dr. Mueller surgically positions beneath your gums onto your jawbone. Once in place, Dr. Mueller places replacement teeth onto the posts, and the new teeth blend in with the rest of your mouth.

Dental implants have three parts:

  • Implant: Titanium post placed on your jaw bone
  • Abutment: Fits on top of the post and attaches the crown to the implant
  • Crown: New tooth that’s usually made of porcelain

However, you must have healthy gums and adequate bone to support the dental implant.

How are dental implants done?

The dental implant procedure takes four steps to complete:

  • Comprehensive Dental Exam: Dr. Mueller examines your mouth, takes dental X-rays, and creates a 3D image of your teeth and mouth
  • Implant Placement: Dental implant gets surgically placed onto your jawbone
  • Healing: Also referred to as osseointegration. Usually takes a few weeks for your bone and implant to combine. A temporary crown, bridge, or denture helps you eat and speak normally. Eat soft, cold foods and warm soup.
  • Insertion: Once healing completes, Dr. Mueller inserts your artificial teeth

What are the benefits of dental implants?

There are numerous benefits to undergoing the dental implant process, including:

  • Strong and Stable Teeth: Implants look, feel, fit, and function like natural teeth, and last a lifetime with proper placement and care. Bite naturally and eat anything you want.
  • Increased Self-Confidence: No embarrassing slipping, clicking, or sagging
  • Protection of Healthy Bone: Empty spaces in your mouth from lost teeth cause deterioration of your jawbone
  • No Cavities: Cavities can’t occur with dental implants

However, it’s important that you maintain your relationship with Dr. Mueller. Meticulous oral hygiene and regular dental visits are critical to the long-term success of dental implants. Clean and care for your gums and mouth the same as with natural teeth.
